Jayde Slade groundwork process

It All Starts on the Ground

Every horse we train begins with a strong foundation: pressure, timing, and trust. Our groundwork process builds responsiveness and respect — not fear — so by the time we swing a leg over, the horse already understands the conversation.

Refinement with Purpose

Once the basics are locked in, we move into real-world scenarios: cattle, roping, trail, and pressure. We push each horse just enough to grow their confidence — not their anxiety. The result? A well-rounded athlete that can rope, ride, and handle anything thrown at them.

Performance Horse Training Timeline

Weeks 1–3

Groundwork with purpose: yielding, responsiveness, and building respect. Preparing the mind for a job, not just obedience.

Weeks 4–6

First saddles and rides. Forward movement, softness, and confidence under pressure—building trust early under saddle.

Weeks 7–10

Dedicated arena work: steering, transitions, correct lead development, body control, and consistent stops. Repetition with intention.

Weeks 11–16

Introducing cattle: flag work, tracking a lead steer or dummy, rating pressure and distance, and reading movement. Start of roping exposure as appropriate.

Weeks 17–24

Deepening performance: refining responsiveness, lateral work, speed control, and working confidently in varied environments. Exposure to sorting, pen work, and light roping practice if ready.

Weeks 25+

Polishing the athlete: tuning stops, transitions, and advanced roping mechanics. Reinforcing mental resilience. Owner involvement begins for smooth transition and continued development at home or in competition.
